COURSE BREAKDOWN

Week 1: What is Labour & Pain Relief options

We begin by getting know each other in the group, followed by a summary of the 3rd trimester of the antenatal period. We discuss those all-important signs of when labour is beginning and how to determine when to contact the hospital/home birth team. We discuss what to pack in your hospital bag and all aspects and considerations for your birth plan, which we will keep referring to over the weeks ahead.

By then end of this session you will have an overview of the 3 stages of labour, a more detailed understanding of the 1st stage, how to cope using active birth techniques, positions and breathing, as well as the pain relief options available to you at your hospital of choice/homebirth (medicated or unmedicated).

Week 2: The Miracle of Birth & Variations from Normal

The journey that your baby makes into this world truly is a miracle. We begin week 2 exploring and discussing the 2nd and 3rd stages of labour; the birth of your baby and options for the delivery of the placenta. We will be continually updating and adding to your birth plan preferences. A beautiful short film of a vaginal birth accompanies this. The second half of the session covers some of the main variations from the normal birthing process; the Induction of Labour, different types of assisted delivery methods and Caesarean section (CS).

Week 3: Immediately After Birth & Feeding Your Baby

Your beautiful little baby has arrived. This week we start by explaining the immediate care both you and your baby will receive post-delivery, while discussing the importance of skin-to- skin and its overwhelming benefits to the Baby, Mummy and Daddy. We focus on breastfeeding your baby, what to expect, feeding ques, effective positioning, attachment, how your milk supply changes in the first few days/weeks and how to tell ‘is my baby getting enough’? We have a fun practice with our baby dolls and look at some of the common issues that can/may occur. We also discuss formula feeding your baby, the safe sterilisation of equipment and making up of feeds.

Week 4: Care of Your Newborn & Yourselves

We explore how to care and look after your baby from his/her physical and practical needs, baby and car seat safety, to safe sleeping and the ongoing support available for both yourselves, as new parents, and for your baby. We discuss immunisations and routine checks your baby will receive up to 18 months of age. Using our baby dolls and equipment, this fun, practical session will give you the opportunity to practise holding, burping, dressing and bathing baby, along with experiencing how to change a nappy.

Post Natal Reunion:

A great opportunity for all of our new parents to introduce their beautiful babies to the rest of the group. This will take place approximately 6 weeks after the last baby of the group is born.
